Oscar: Ranked No.1 in Europe U18

EGR (Jan 2025)

Oscar has been working on his game with Simon for the past 4 years. The improvements in consistency of ball striking, better technique and increased confidence in short game, has led to very consistent tournament performances. National honours have followed and a pick for the prestigious 2024 Jacques Léglise Trophy team. Oscar is part of the England boys squad in 24/25, ranked No.1 in Europe U18 and features in the top 550 on WAGR. Simon is an incredibly positive, enthusiastic and dedicated coach with a deep passion for his pupils to improve and enjoy the game whether a beginner or elite player.

I was introduced to Simon around 3 years ago, by a very close friend, and he’s been supporting my game development ever since. Simon demonstrated a great deal of patience at the start, but it was worth it. My game has improved greatly and he’s also furnished me with practice methods that allow me to continue the journey when practicing alone. We work together regularly and I always enjoy our sessions, difficult not to, he’s a top man too.

I have been working with Simon for three and a half years. I was in a very bad place with my golf and thinking about quitting, but when I started with Simon I started to really understand my game. Simon made me love playing golf again and that’s why I came back to it. He encouraged and raised my game tremendously and not only that improved my mental game. This has allowed me to go on to compete at a high level, playing against some of the best college players in the USA, where I am now at university on a golf scholarship. Simon continues to be my coach in the UK. He is a legend!

As a 59 year old scratch player, I have been delighted to have the support and coaching of Simon to win a national title with Surrey and to score some of the lowest rounds in my golfing life.

David Boxall, Surrey Seniors Captain 2023-24

Simon Peaford has been involved with coaching at Surrey Women’s Golf since 2020. He coaches the Surrey Junior Girls’ Training programme, working with our performance and development squads in the age groups U15-U18.

Simon covers all aspects of the game from shot-making and shot selection to course management and match play skills. His coaching has been key to the County Teams’ successes at Junior Girls’ and First Team levels, both teams having won regional County titles. He also works closely with our Senior Women’s squad, the winter training squad and a number of individual players. He is a highly respected and valued member of our coaching team.

Surrey Seniors: National Champions, 2023

Simon became the coach of the Surrey County Senior Men’s team in 2023. He had an immediate influence on the whole squad with his coaching skills, training drills, organisation and attention to detail. A group of experienced over-55 golfers were galvanised into a very successful team that won national title, the English Seniors County Finals, and the South East League for the first time. Four major trophies were won by the team in 8 months. Individual players were able to rekindle past glories by bringing their golf game back to their best levels of performance.

Surrey County Golf – Seniors Squad

Simon saved my golf from the abyss after a wrist injury and he has a unique understanding of my strengths and weaknesses. He had enabled me to understand my swing, which allows me to be a more consistent ball striker and eliminate the destructive shots in my game. Since working with Simon, I am proud to become a club champion again after winning the Scratch Knockout at Royal Cinque Ports.

+0.5 Handicap

Since being taught by Simon in a year my handicap has gone from 0 to +2. But more importantly than that, my understanding of what makes me play good golf and the knowledge I’ve gained from him has been priceless. In a lesson we always cover technical aspects, talk about my golf on the course plus my course management. Simon’s coaching is always enjoyable and tailored to my game which is why I have been able to improve

+ 2 Handicap – US College Player

Simon has been coaching Grace since August 2022 and has taken her game from strength to strength. Since that time Grace has gone from a 19 to 4 handicap which is testament to Simon’s coaching ability, dedication and no shortage of patience!

Simon’s strengths lie in his ability to try various coaching methods to get the result he and Grace needed to progress. He doesn’t use complex swing jargon but instead utilises a vast array of analogies to allow the pupil to clearly understand the instruction.

Having 2 daughters of the same age, Simon is able to understand the complexities of being a teenager, what they are capable of and spotting when to push and when to pull back.

In two years Simon has not once been late for a lesson or cancelled a pre-existing appointment. More often than not he will go past the allotted lesson time to ensure the session’s targets are met.

He is always available for a chat or what’s app message to discuss feedback, even with the pushiest of parents!

We owe a huge amount to Simon and I have no doubt Grace will continue to progress her game under Simon’s tutelage.
In short, I cannot recommend Simon highly enough!

You might seek the advice of a qualified PGA Professional to guide you through the challenges of improving or learning golf. If you have a desire to be a better golfer and hit shots with greater consistency and distance, then you will need to learn some new skills specific to your game. The skills that got you to this point aren’t necessarily enough to reach your goals but with good advice combined with guided practice plan, a golf coach can help you improve in the most efficient and enjoyable way.

To improve your golf, a coach will initially want to understand your golfing aims, ambitions, upcoming golf fixtures, unique challenges and personal goals. By understanding your golf experiences you and your coach can then begin to assess your game and later discuss an ideal lesson schedule.

There are many different types of shots played on a golf course. Once you have chosen a skill to focus on, a successful golf lesson will help you understand your current swing style and the reasons why it has got you to where you are. Your coach will explain what skills you can learn to improve your shots and importantly how you are going to learn these new techniques.

If it’s your first lesson, Its a good idea to arrive in plenty of time to allow you to locate your coach and get comfortable with the environment. It’s normal for a coach to provide an area for you to warm up, even do some stretching exercises so you are ready to hit shots from the start of your lesson time.

More experienced players will arrive ready with feedback on their recent form and have key questions prepared to discuss with their coach during the lesson.

After your coach has given an accurate description and demonstration of your current technique and how it is influencing your shots, you can then discuss the ideal movements that will benefit you, how you are going to reproduce them, and understand what a successful outcome will look like.

It’s then important for you to experience the ideal technique using rehearsal movements (sometimes at a slower speed) both with and without a ball, combined with practice drills and the use of any training aids relevant to your skill development.

Through the training with your coach you will have demonstrated a better movement pattern that has noticeable benefits. You should be confident that you have clear, achievable and enjoyable goals to practice before returning for your next lesson.

As a record of your lesson and for the avoidance of doubt, your coach should provide you with notes taken during the lesson, and sometimes a video with voice over instruction to clarify your goals.

Each coaching plan is tailored individually to you and your ambition. Simon’s standard lesson rate is £85 but because every golfer is different rates can be tailored to your specific requirements. This means lower rates for juniors.

It is never too early for a child to learn and develop movement skills including those required for golf .

A child will benefit hugely from learning the skills of balance, rhythm, throwing, crawling and many other coordination skills that will help them flourish in so many activities including golf, and a good golf coach will be able to successfully deliver these valuable skills to multiple age groups.

Young golfers should be engaged in as many activities as possible to enhance their skill development, and certainly participation in sport helps grow life skills such as self confidence, ability to play, being part of a team, and importantly the develop of friendships.

If you are having regular coaching it’s ideal that you leave enough time between lessons to practice the skills you have learnt before returning for your next lesson.

Your coach will want to see how you’ve been working on your game and how you have interpreted the ideas you have discussed before moving forward.
